Nayt’s mother became a caretaker for Alys shortly after she was born to the Bann and his wife, and as a result Nayt grew up around Alys and her family. Ignorant to their differences as young children, the two have been playmates and friends since childhood. However when Nayt and Alys reached adolescence it became increasingly clear to the elf that he did not belong in the same world as his friend.
Alys began training as a soldier, wore fancy clothes and was a guest at banquets. Nayt in contrast, became an additional servant for Alys’s family, he had a single outfit that he cleaned everyday, and usually found himself serving trays of drinks and food to the privileged guests of the Bann. Nayt also became increasingly aware of the poverty that ran rampant in the alienage which he returned to each evening.
Despite his own family’s financial struggles, they were small nuisances compared to many of his neighbors. Nayt began pilfering “unneeded” items from Alys’s family and selling them for silver to support some of his desperate friends and neighbors in the alienage. A small unused vase here, a broken and forgotten necklace there, he found a variety of small treasures the Bann and his family wouldn’t miss. Nayt quickly became quite skilled at sneaking out little “extras” and through his involvement in helping his fellow elves he became acquainted with the sometimes radical Alurvelve.
Overtime Nayt was unable to successfully hide his indiscretions from Alys. The fact that she never turned him over to the Guard cemented his loyalty to her, and when she began to discover her “gift” Nayt promised to help her any way he could. When she came to him and shared her plans to leave Highever, Nayt turned to Alurvelve for help, and soon the group found themselves escaping the city in a dwarven caravan.
